Manzanita Writers' Series - April 2009 Event

Willa Schneberg, reading from Storytelling in Cambodia and in the Margins of the World (poetry)

Instead of the usual Open Mic, the Manzanita Writers' Series held a 'Recycled Poetry Slam.' Lines from famous poems, by well-known poets, were handed out for inspiration. The entire line could serve as a prompt--or just a word from the line, or maybe even just the idea, and participants were asked to write for ten minutes. Some 25 people decided to try their hand at the timed writing. Afterwards twelve people read their '10-minute-poem'. Even those who offered the disclaimer "I'm not a poet" were received with enthusiastic applause.

Here's one example from Julius Jortner, a self-taught poet from Pacific City: "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by . . ."   Howl, Allen Ginsberg

When, goaded by loss, I arose
from my sleep of youth
and moneyed middle age,
and opened my eyes to see through
the misted illusions I'd lived, rage
cleared the way to be again
to become what could have been sooner,
had I avoided what so many
of the best minds of my generation
were destroyed by - comfort.
