Hoffman Center Offers Advance Figure Composition
The Hoffman Center in Manzanita will host a second "Advanced Figure Composition" class, led by Ray Horton, Wednesday, June 17. The class will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Center’s main building at 595 Laneda Avenue.
The workshop will explore pushing the interpretation of the human form beyond academic rendering, with an emphasis on using color to express the artist’s personal concepts and ideas. “We will have four poses of one hour each, with 20-30 minutes for discussion and critique,” said Horton. "We will review and employ positive/negative space, pentimento, some color theory, line and form and their complimentary relationship, and the impact of placement on the design of a drawing, among other things."
Participation in this workshop is limited to seven persons. The cost is $95, which includes the model fee, some special materials, and lunch. Participants should have a comfortable grounding in drawing and in the figure.
To register or obtain more information about the class, contact Horton at 503-234-0808 or 29ford@nehalemtel.net.
Horton graduated from PSU in 1970 with a BS in art. He worked as a freelance graphic designer until retiring in 2007. He also taught drawing and graphic design at Pacific Northwest College of Art for five years in the early '90s.
Hoffman Center Offers Photography Workshop
The Hoffman Center in Manzanita will host a two-day "People and Landscape" digital photography workshop the weekend of June 27-28. Led by photojournalist Joel Preston Smith, the workshop will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
each day and cost $175. It will be held in the Center Annex at 594 Laneda Avenue.
The workshop blends composition and visual storytelling with constructive critiques, and bridges both documentary and classical landscape photography.
"We will spend the first morning reviewing the students’ current images and style, providing feedback on composition and content, and discussing specific methods for improving their technical and artistic skills. After the review, we’ll head outside to shoot," said Smith.
"We will work with traditional landscape compositions, and also with techniques unique to documentary photography. In the documentary approach, we will work to record the presence and impact of people on the Oregon coast," he added.
The second day will begin with a group review of images taken on Saturday, with discussions of composition and the techniques that underlie dramatic photography. More fieldwork will follow, with an evening critique of Day 2 images and recommendations for future work.
"Joel came to Manzanita in February to present his ‘Night of a Thousand Stars and Other Portraits of Iraq’ program," said Hoffman Center board president David Dillon. "We were delighted that he offered to bring a workshop here for our many experienced and aspiring photographers."
Persons interested in registering for the workshop, or obtaining more information, should contact Smith at 503-935-7145 or joelprestonsmith@gmail.com
Smith is a freelance writer and photographer based in Portland, Oregon. He is the author of Night of a Thousand Stars and Other Portraits of Iraq.
