Sculpture Workshop Set for Manzanita

Carole MurphyCarole Murphy, of Murphy’s Studio in Portland, will present a special three-day sculpture workshop at the Hoffman Center Annex in Manzanita Friday - Sunday, September 12 - 14. Sessions will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, and pre-registration is required. The cost will be $175, plus a $20 materials fee. The Annex is located at 594 Laneda Avenue.

The workshop will explore the use of aerated cement, an easily carveable form of cement. Murphy says the material is relatively new to US artists, but has been used in Europe for over 80 years. Used primarily as a "green" building material, Murphy adopted aerated cement as a new sculpture medium.

Aerated cement sculpture"In the three days of the workshop, you will become more comfortable finding your own vision and putting that vision into form,"said Murphy. "It is possible that the student may move from the conceptual stage of a work of art to a finished sculpture, but the intention of the workshop is to get your creativity flowing and to give you the means to express it."

Murphy's workshops are taught in an unconventional style as she follows the student, rather than having the student follow her. In doing so, she helps students find their own direction of expression. Having taught on the east coast as well as here in Oregon for over 15 years, she finds that she loves teaching more and more as she sees the beauty her students create.

Persons interested in attending the Hoffman Center workshop are asked to contact Murphy at (503) 235-7233 or sculptor@CaroleMurphy.com.

Hoffman Center Receives $15K Grant

The Hoffman Center in Manzanita has been awarded a $15,000 grant by the Laird Norton Family Foundation to fund an Outreach Coordinator position. The part-time employee will work with area public and private schools, and home-school families, to provide arts programs during the school year and summer vacation.

The Outreach Coordinator will work with the Hoffman Center’s community of support and other arts groups. Programs may include clay, painting, collage, music, dance, and theatre. The programs could be conducted at the center or at the schools.

"Needless to say, we were excited to learn about this grant," said Center president David Dillon. "It will enable us to bring more art experiences to local kids, providing an early appreciation for creative endeavors that can stay with them for life."

"We really appreciate Kathleen Ryan, who envisioned this position and pursued a grant to fund it," added Dillon. "Kathleen is a powerful advocate for the arts in our community."

A recruiting effort is underway to fill the Outreach Coordinator position so work can begin September 1.

Based in Seattle, the Laird Norton Family Foundation is a private family foundation that makes grants for charitable purposes in the U.S. in areas of Climate Change, Global Fundamentals, Arts in Education, and Watershed Stewardship.
